This is my 10th hunt of this type and this was by far the best organized African hunt I have been on. Kowas Hunting Safaris is a top notch and high quality outfit that is managed extremely well. I chose Kowas based on reputation and the level of professionalism shown by Ansie Strauss (wife and detail person) during the booking process. Danie Strauss is a skilled businessman and runs a top flight operation.
The PH’s were top notch. Both Jacques Strauss and Matheus Theofelus are very good PH’s, keen to hunt, excellent trackers and skilled in stalking. Both held my son and I to a high ethical standard while we hunted. It was very refreshing to see and hear a PH focused on ethical hunting rather than just piling up dead animals. I have been with many trackers, skinners and spotters who were local guys, but this was a first for me to hunt with an Oshiwambo speaking guide, Matheus. After one day with him I realized I was with a special person – gifted observations skills, superb knowledge of the animals and his craft and a very cool character when it came to dealing with skittish animals and not so perfect hunters. I have hunted with about 20 PH’s or North American guides over the years. I would rank Matheus as number 2 or 3 in terms of skills- he was that good.
The accommodations and food were excellent. The head chef is Selma who happened to be the wife of the PH I hunted with. My wife is a gourmet cook and I know good food. Selma was in that class and did a super job. This is a hunt to bring your wife to. The ultimate question is – would I do this hunt again? Absolutely!

Old Africa has nothing on Kowas Hunting Safaris…  What superb landscapes, animals and hospitality!  Hunting and taking my 56” Kudu bull fulfilled a lifelong dream.  The vintage heart of the Dark Continent lives on right here in central Namibia, at Kowas.

Thanks for the memories and new friendships!

What I will miss about Kowas:

360 degrees of horizon, amazing host / hostess skills, “good morning, Madame!”, daily laundry service, trucks pulling into camp with big smiles, stories around the campfire, a different set of stars in pitch black nights, a husband snoring soundly because he has trekked and stalked an grinned all day, hearing our hosts pray in Afrikaans, homemade bread and amazing food, a house and a lapa built around a tree, raked sand walkways, a jillion fun birds, taking 2 girls (Selma and Julia) shooting at the shooting range for the first time, the smell of fresh savannah grass in the am, 4 friends who’ve become family (and 16 medal trophies plus Mountain Zebra)!

As I made the long journey back, I could not help but reflect on what I would refer to as a life changing experience. I thought about how I could properly compliment Kowas on their ethics, their drive and their tireless effort to ensure that they went above and beyond to accommodate everything during our stay. I thought about Jacques desire to get me the best trophies, Ansie’s drive to ensure that I enjoyed my stay and Danie’s desire to ensure that my glass was never empty.

At the end of the trip, the best thing I could tell you is that you helped me to raise the bar both personally and professionally.  Personally I will always reflect on the Stauss family values and the strong bound they have with each other. Professionally I will continually benchmark the business I manage, by comparing it to the customer service level of Kowas.  You have a combination of value and ethics that most people desire to achieve, but can never approach.

Thanks Again for a wonderful Safari,

Jeremy Holck

I have hunted in many parts of the dark continent before, but Namibia has always been on my to do list.  So finally the time had come to choose the right outfitter for me.  Most safaris can be an emotional roller coaster, so some serous research and fact finding was in order. After weeks of looking at sites I chose Kowas hunting safaris owned and operated by Danie &Ansie Strauss and their son Jacques.

I sent them an email with an inquiry on the possibility of booking a hunt with them and my wish list. I received a prompt reply from Ansie Strauss.  The hunt was booked and over the following months Ansie and I kept in regular contact.  A hunting buddy of mine Joe decided to join me at the last minute, this was not an issue, as a quick email to Ansie followed by a prompt reply saying "it will not be a problem, just email his details and what he would like to hunt" meant Joe's trip was sorted.

We was collected at Windhoek airport by Danie and Ansie for the relatively short drive to their home,  where a wonderful breakfast was  waiting for us. Straight away I felt at home with my new friends in Namibia, And   over the coming days you could see the love and passion that all the Strauss family felt for their natural environment.  The food was excellent, on the first night Zebra steaks were cooked on a griddle on the open fire next to their unique bar built around a acacia tree.

The accommodation was very comfortable, traditionally built with thatched roofs overlooking a water hole with plenty of game to view from my porch and even warthogs plucking the grass by the swimming pool while we ate lunch.

Mathews my PH is an extremely gifted gentleman with unique skills and adaptability whose knowledge of game was just incredible. Mathews was the first black PH in Namibia championed by Danie Strauss a former president of NAPHA.

With all the animals on my wish list taken and making gold and silver medals all that remained  was to take a really good old Kudu bull with a wide spread. Three days of hard hunting with lots of walking and traversing of mountains with just a couple of hours of light remaining on the last day there he was, the elusive grey ghost  ivory tips glistening in the setting sun. This is how hunting should be done.

With such a high standard of ethical hunting you have by far exceeded all my expectations.
Thank you all at Kowas for being such gracious hosts and sharing such an amazing gift,  it was not easy to leave.

We have been reflecting about any recommendations/ideas/suggestions we might have. Honestly, there is not one single thing that we would change or suggest that you do differently. From the moment we met Jacques and Ansie at the Dallas Safari Club show, we were impressed.  Marketing, whether we realize it or not, is very important, as it is a client’s first impression. You remembered what we wanted from a hunt (the Kudu and Jacques for a PH) and you responded to all of our emails in a timely manner.  From the moment Danie picked us up at the airport to the minute that Ansie and Jacques dropped us off, we did not have a care in the world. You took care of every detail for us.

The most important part of the trip for us was the hunt and safety…in that order. Randy wasn’t worried about safety, but DeAnne sure was because there is an element of risk in travelling and hunting in a foreign country. Your accommodations were perfect.  Just luxurious enough, but not over board, so that we knew we were there to hunt. We never felt like we couldn’t go to our room, or attend a dinner with dust on our boots or hunting clothes on. Your entire property was in immaculate condition. We also appreciated how you are incorporating your neighbors’ farms in your hunting program – encouraging them to implement management practices that are beneficial to wildlife because there is an economic benefit.

Randy’s comment is that it is nice to deal with smart people, with lots of integrity, that know how to take care of business - and that includes the entire Strauss. We know that Ansie was taking care of all the important details while Jacque ensured that the hunting part of our experience in Namibia was exceptional. Randy enjoyed every “hunting” moment - Jacques knows what he is doing!! It was also nice to experience all of your employees. They were very engaged and a pleasure to be around.  They took pride in their jobs, evidenced by the great meals, a beautiful garden area, cleaning/laundry service and the care of the trophies and heads.

Ansie said that your business is based on “trust”. We have to trust you and you have to trust us. We never once had a second thought after we made our decision to go with Kowas. We very much appreciate that you offered and actually took time to go with us on a photographic safari. That was important to DeAnne and we have very special memories of the elephants, Rhino, hippos, cheetahs and lions! We are just sorry that Danie couldn’t join us, but we understand and appreciate his commitment to the Rugby team.
